Full Description

During a watching brief at the site of 16 Queens Gardens, Dover, ahead of the development of the site into flats, two brick built cellar walls were located, the cellar had been subsequently backfilled with rubble. A beaten grey clay floor was exposed at the base of the cellar, the stratigraphic relationship of this floor to the walls is unknown. These features almost certainly date to the middle part of the 19th century when the area of Queens Gardens was first developed for housing and light industry. This is consistent with cartographic evidence, which shows Queens Gardens to have been open land in 1581, 1800 and 1801, and to have been developed into its present form (approximately) from at last 1859, the exception of substantial improvements made at both ends of the road in 1894.
