Full Description

An evaluation prior to the redevelopment of the Town Yard site was undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 2002. The evaluation 13 early walls and foundations. These were variously constructed of mortared chalk, brick, flint and greensand rubble and lay at depths of between 0.35m and 0.7m below present ground level. Two of the walls related to a small chalk lined tank towards the western end of the trench, whilst two further walls to the east of this tank appear to relate to shallow adjacent cellars extending southwards beyond the area of excavation. The tank was filled with a dark grey brown ashy loam, this deposit yielded 17 pot-sherds dated c. A.D. 1780-1825 alongside five clay pipe fragments. Various other deposits were sample excavated and these yielded more than one hundred pot sherds, all datable to within the period c. A.D 1700-1825. Unfortunately two, more recent, linear features, here in the form of a robbed brick sewer and concrete foundation, had caused significant damage to the earlier remains. It is however, likely that areas a short distance to either the north or the south of the excavation may produce a largely in-tact sequence of pre-railway deposits. (1)
