Full Description

Unfortunatley much of the stratified archaeological deposits were removed and destroyed during the removal of foundations associated with the demolition of buildings at the Royal Victoria Hospital site, and only a rapid inspection of the exposed soil and an examination of the spoil was possible. The spoil from one of the trenches yeilded an important group of Anglo Saxon pottery in association with fragments of burnt clay/daub and animal bone. The pottery ranges in date from the 5th to 7th centuries A.D. and suggests contemporaray occupation near to the site. Significantly, some 200m to the south west, on Priory Hill evidence for an extensive early Anglo Saxon cemetery. Originally it has been thought that this cemetery served the known Anglo Saxon settlement in Dover town centre but this new evidence may suggest that these burials relate to another community which occupied land at the vally bottom, directly below Priory Hill, adjacent to the Victoria Hospital Site. Further finds of Anglo Saxon pottery were made when a watching brief was maintained at the site during the drilling of piles and excavation of service trenches associated with the development of the site. (2)
