Full Description
In connection with the proposed construction of a new Lidl supermarket with basement car parking a series of 11 test pits and 2 boreholes were excavated. These works were observed by members of Canterbury Archaeological Trust. The site is located on the eastern side of Dover at the junction of Castle Street with Maison Dieu Road. Evidence for former buildings at this site were revealed in numerous trenches. A 19th century yellow stock brick wall was located in trench ten, it abuts a later concrete floor which probably relates to a basemented area. Positioning of this early wall on a 19th century map of the area, it falls exactly on the line of the original boundary the separated the south-western brewery plot from the north eastern Castle Place plot.
