Full Description
In connection with the proposed construction of a new Lidl supermarket with basement car parking a series of 11 test pits and 2 boreholes were excavated. These works were observed by members of Canterbury Archaeological Trust. The site is located on the eastern side of Dover at the junction of Castle Street with Maison Dieu Road. In Test-Pit 10, at a depth of 2.5m below the present ground level was a thin layer of orange clay resting upon a thin deposit of chalk rubble. This orange clay may represent some sort of deeply buried floor, resting on a levelling/foundation deposit of chalk rubble. Underneath this chalk layer, the lowest recorded deposit was a waterlogged grey sandy silt which contained residual Roman pot and tile. There were no building remains or datable material revealed in association with this possible floor level, therefore its date and function remain unknown. (1)
