In connection with the proposed construction of a new Lidl supermarket with basement car parking a series of 11 test pits and 2 boreholes were excavated. These works were observed by members of Canterbury Archaeological Trust. The site is located on the eastern side of Dover at the junction of Castle Street with Maison Dieu Road. Evidence for earlier buildings which formerly occupied the Lidl's site were uncovered. In Test-Pits 2, 3, 7, 8 and 11, which were dug in the central part of the standing building, areas of concrete flooring relating to an earlier structure were revealed. Its general appearance indicated that this concrete was of 20th century date. In Test-Pits 2, 8 and 11, the floor sloped to the north east and seems to have formed a ramp leading down to a semi basemented area. The level concrete floor exposed at a depth of 1.44m below the present ground level in Test-Pit 7 is likely to be the floor of this basement. (1)
