Full Description

During excavations undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, ahead of the rebuilding of the Townwall Street filling Station, Dover, a complex series of stratified archaeological deposits were revealed representing activity at the site between the early Medieval period and later post medieval periods. Period 1; 1175-1300 is the first time intensive colonisation of the site began (before had been only superficial activity within the area; Period 0). A series of building plots was established, each occupied by a succession of timber or stone structures, in all 8 individual building plots were identified and five of these were examined in detail. Buildings 26, 27 and 38 were located in plot E at the southern end of the site, these are the seventh, eighth and ninth in the sequence, in a series of nine buildings located at this part of the site.

Building 26 replaces building 5 on the same plot, but following a period of abandonment, it has been damaged by a number of later features. It consists of a thin patchy floor of orange brown clay with traces of several repairs interleaved with thin occupation layers. Evidence for a 1.8m length of external walling is evidenced by a slot containing 17 iron clench nails, set at intervals of about 0.1m.

Building 27 was built across the remains of building 26 but has been heavily damaged by later features. It consisted of two separate areas of heavily worn and truncated rammed chalk and clay floors interleaved with thin occupation layers.

Building 38 is the final identifiable structure on the plot; it is largely unsealed and has been severely damaged by later features, only the north-west side survived. It consists of a series of rammed chalk floors interleaved with thin occupation layers. (1)
