Full Description
During excavations undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, ahead of the rebuilding of the Townwall Street filling Station, Dover, a complex series of stratified archaeological deposits were revealed representing activity at the site between the early Medieval period and later post medieval periods. Period 1; 1175-1300 is the first time intensive colonisation of the site began (before had been only superficial activity within the area; Period 0). A series of building plots was established, each occupied by a succession of timber or stone structures, in all 8 individual building plots were identified and five of these were examined in detail. Buildings 34 and 25 were located in plot F which is situated at the juction of the path and Clarence Street and seems to be the largest plot. This plot appears to have been occupied intermittently, with at least two significant breaks in the sequence of buildings. Building 34 and 25 are the fourth and fifth in a sequence of ten buildings on this plot and can be dated to between c. 1225 and c. 1275.
Building 34 was built across the site of building 37, separated from it by deposits of accumulated soil and domestic rubbish suggesting a gap between the demolition of building 37 and erection of building 34. it consists of a chalk, flint, and greensand raft up to 0.6m thick which supported a trodden chalk floor overlain by a thin patchy occupation layer. There is a strip of rough untrodden chalk on the north east side which could represent the location of a wall and two large stones along the south east side may represent pad stones for timbers. The north west corner had been removed by a later building (building 49). Abutting the north east side of the foundation raft and continuing beyond its north west end was an extensive layer of soily beach shingle. This apparently formed an open yard area.
Building 25 cut through the floor of building 34 and consisted of a single cream chalky clay and rammed chalk floor laid directly over the previous building. The north west corner had been removed by a later building (building 49). The floor contained stake-holes and four post holes. A line of stake holes located parrallel to the south west side may relate to an internal division.
A significant anmount of finds were recovered from with deposits associated with these buildings, particuarly in the domestic dump which accumulated beneath the foundations of building 34, within which was over 1000 sherds of pottery and numerous iron implements. (1)
