Full Description

During excavations undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, ahead of the rebuilding of the Townwall Street filling Station, Dover, a complex series of stratified archaeological deposits were revealed representing activity at the site between the early Medieval period and later post medieval periods. Period 1; 1175-1300 is the first time intensive colonisation of the site began (before had been only superficial activity within the area; Period 0). A series of building plots was established, each occupied by a succession of timber or stone structures, in all 8 individual building plots were identified and five of these were examined in detail. Plot G was a small plot between E and H and contained a succession of ten individual buildings. Buildings 6 and 7 were the second and third in the succession and may be dated to c. 1150-1200 (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

Building 6 was built across the site of building 40but on a new axis separated from the earlier structure by make up deposits of sandy beach shingle and flint cobbles in puddled chalk. It consists of a succession of rammed chalk floors separated by thin occupation layers.

Building 7 is a replacement of building 6, separated from it by a make-up layer of sandy beach shingle. It consists of a complex succession of patchy rammed chalk floors separated by thin occupation layers. The floors are bounded on the north west, south west and north east sides by low wall footings of chalk rubble. A small pit, cut into the south west wall which appears to be contemporary with the use of the building contained the bones of an infant, probably still born, buried in an upright position.

The finds associated with these two buildings include numerous sherds of potter and a vast quantity of animal remains. There are also a variety of iron implements including iron fishing hooks and weights as well as more general iron tools. (1)
