Monument record TR 34 SW 1508 - Medieval building (building 45) off Townwall Street, Dover (Period 2)

Summary

During excavations undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, ahead of the rebuilding of the Townwall Street filling Station, Dover, a complex series of stratified archaeological deposits were revealed representing activity at the site between the early Medieval period and later post medieval periods. In period 2, following the densely packed timber and stone buildings of the period 1 occupation of the site, there appears to have been a marked hiatus at the end of the 13th century, when the structures on most of the plots were abandoned. Building 45 was located within an area enclosed by the boundary walls, at the north-eastern end of plot F, about 6m south-east of Clarence Street. It consisted of a shallow, roughly square, half cellar, 0.5m deep and cut into the earlier soil deposits which accumulated after the abandonment of the period 1 structures. (Location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

Full Description

It has been given a possible date of between c. 1375 - 1450.

This cellar was probably part of a larger timber framed building, perhaps set gable end onto Clarence Street. Traces of poorly constructed chalk, flint and greensand rubble walls bonded in chalky clay were found lining the cellar, but these were largely robbed. The estimated internal dimensions are 3.5m by 3.6m. The cellar is floored with clay containing chalk and flint, the flints tended to occur in patches and may represent repairs to the floor. Deliberate infilling of this cellar with soil occurred, pottery within this fill suggests a date of c. 1450-1525 for this infilling. (1)
