Monument record TR 34 SW 1509 - Later Medieval boundary walls, off Townwall Street Dover (Period 2)

Summary

During excavations undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, ahead of the rebuilding of the Townwall Street filling Station, Dover, a complex series of stratified archaeological deposits were revealed representing activity at the site between the early Medieval period and later post medieval periods. In period 2, following the densely packed timber and stone buildings of the period 1 occupation of the site, there appears to have been a marked hiatus at the end of the 13th century, when the structures on most of the plots were abandoned. A series of stone boundary walls were laid out across the south eastern part of the site. Constructed in short lengths these appear to be of slightly different dates and more than one phase is certainly represented. They all post-date the latest period 1 structures but closely followed the earlier boundaries. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information).

Full Description

None of these walls were sufficiently extensive to demonstrate that it belonged to a building, though certain individual sections were of substantial construction.

Plot H seems to have been fully enclosed, former plots E, F and G were apparently united within a roughly square yard area, around 15m across. Most of the boundary walls survive only as bases or foundations and there was virtually no associated stratification, making their precise dating difficult.

Walls 140, 207, 247, 1696, 1689, 1690 and 1694 represent several different phases but are clearly intended to create a continuous boundary running along the south east side of Clarence Street, extending north-east from plot D and delimiting the north-west edge of the former plots F and H. from time to time, lengths were refaced or completely rebuilt.

Walls 122, 123, 1105 and 125 were of different phases but collectively delimited the south-west and south-east sides of plot H, cutting the edges of many period 1 structures. Foundations 122 and 123 were of one build and joined at a right angle to form the south corner of the enclosed area. The north-west corner had subsequently been cut by a post medieval well, destroying its relationship with foundation 1105 further to the north-west. Foundation 125 ran up to the wall bounding the south-east side of Clarence Street, forming the west corner of the enclosed area.

Walls 1394/1396/2108 is a substantial chalk rubble foundation running along the north-east side of plot D, following the south-west boundary of former plots E and F and cutting through a number of period 1 structures. It was traced for a distance of 9.7m; about 1m deep and 0.65m wide. The south-east end is marked by a short return to the north-east perhaps the base of a buttress or pier. (1)
