Full Description
During excavations undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, ahead of the rebuilding of the Townwall Street filling Station, Dover, a complex series of stratified archaeological deposits were revealed representing activity at the site between the early Medieval period and later post medieval periods. Period 3 (c. 1550-1780) represents an increase in activity across the site, a series of buildings was constructed along Clarence Street (B47-51 and B53) with a cellared structure further to the south-east (B46). To the south-western end of the site, in an area which, in the later Medieval and early post medieval period, was occupied by East Brook Water, were a succession of mortared stone walls were constructed on the reclaimed land, these create at least three enclosed areas.
These probably represent walled gardens and the layers of dark loam appear to be associated cultivation soils. The surface of this soil in the north western enclosure showed a series of 'ridge and furrow' like features, which must have been connected to some kind of horticultural process. These shallow features had been preserved when the adjacent boundary walls were demolished and the area sealed by rubble. Demolition may have occurred when the ground was cleared for the construction of Clarence House, during the later 18th century. (1)
