Full Description

During excavations undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, ahead of the rebuilding of the Townwall Street filling Station, Dover, a complex series of stratified archaeological deposits were revealed representing activity at the site between the early Medieval period and later post medieval periods. Period 3 (c. 1550-1780) represents an increase in activity across the site, a series of buildings was constructed along Clarence Street (B47-51 and B53) with a cellared structure further to the south-east (B46). Building 47 consisted of a stone lined cellar, 0.65m deep, fronting on to Clarence Street at the north-west end of the Medieval plot H.

It had been cut down the face of earlier, Medieval boundary walls. It was roughly rectangular in plan, measuring internally 3.8-4m (NW-SE) by 4.62-5.16m (NE-SW). The walls are of large chalk blocks laid alternately with flint and greensand lumps, in a semi decorative arrangement and bonded with a pink white gritty mortar. Near the middle of the north-west wall were the remains of a doorway 0.8m wide, with two brick edged steps, cut through boundary wall to provide access to Clarence Street. Slight traces of a rammed chalk floor overlying an earlier, more extensive clay floor and sealed by a thin occupation layer. The cellar had been deliberately backfilled with soil and mortar rubble.
