During excavations undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, ahead of the rebuilding of the Townwall Street filling Station, Dover, a complex series of stratified archaeological deposits were revealed representing activity at the site between the early Medieval period and later post medieval periods. Period 3 (c. 1550-1780) represents an increase in activity across the site, a series of buildings was constructed along Clarence Street (B47-51 and B53) with a cellared structure further to the south-east (B46). Building 53 consists of fragmentary remains, which have been severely damaged by later activity, immediately to the south-west of building 48.

The pre-existing walls bounding Clarence Street and the south west side of building 48 seem to have delimited two sides of the structure. A short length of clay bonded chalk rubble footing marked the south-west limit but this could have been an internal partition within a once larger structure that extended up to building 49. as surviving, building 53 was 3.9m (NW-SE) by 2.8m (SW-NE). There was traces of a clay floor and a succession of hearths set in a rectangular pit at the west corner. The floor was subsequently cut by a later, shallow, chalk blocked lined tank built against the face of the wall. (1)
