Full Description
Large assemblage (822 sherds) of 11th to 13th century pottery, found during excavation prior to construction of the Paramedical Centre in 1987. The majority of the medieval pottery from the CCCU campus is of this date, and this assemblage is one of two large ones that make up that group (the other is Site 1, the Union Building, EKE13677). These are important because they show a link between the Anglo-Saxon occupation and the 14th century outer precinct of St Augustine's Abbey.
From the report: "The dominant fabric here is Canterbury Early Medieval Sandy Ware followed by local/East Kent Shelly wares of similar date, and smaller amounts of Canterbury shell-dusted ware, as well as much smaller numbers of foreign imports from North France/Flanders. Vessel forms are predominantly cooking pots with smaller numbers of bowls and spouted pitchers." (2)
"The largest assemblage, from Site 8, (822 sherds), is mostly of twelfth- and thirteenth-century material with little dating after c. 1250. Among the latter are three cooking pot profiles and an important pit group of c. 1175-1225. This group produced 45 rims or featured sherds, representing as many vessels; among these are four cooking pot and bowl profiles, spouted pitcher rims and spouts, and the base of an imported German Pingsdorf-type pitcher or jar." (2)
303 sherds of 13th to 14th century pottery and 16 sherds of pottery dating from AD 1375-1550 were also found, but there is no further information available (2).
