A series of localised Saxon soil deposits, covering an area of approximately 70 square meters was located and excavated, immediately to the west of the west wall of the Roman Saxon shore fort, in the north west corner of the northern excavation site. It is unlikely that these deposits constituted a structure, rather they represent soil and domestic rubbish spread over a comparatively small area.

The deposits had sloped down into the partly silted Roman defensive ditch and flanked the front of the defensive bastion. They were identified as being laid in the 6th - 9th centuries and contained an important assemblage of Saxon objects some of which represent imports from the continent. (1)
