During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dovers Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, Substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. A large water pipeline consisting of a series of large earthenware pipes set in a shallow U shaped trench was located approximately 0.6m from the inside face of the fort wall, during a small excavation on Durham Hill (Durham Hill south site).
The pipe and trench was traced for a distance of 5m running north-south across the site. The pipeline had been badly robbed but large fragments of five hollow pipes remained in situ one of which was substantially complete and was 14-16cm in diameter and 80cm in length. (1)
