Full Description
(Summarised from publication)
During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dovers Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. Sections of all four walls of the fort were located, including a length of the east wall which was discovered under the deep cellars of the demolished Warren and Reynolds Warehouse, on the north side of Queen Street (B.M.W. site), in 1974. This walling was located close to the east gatehouse of the Classis Britannica Fort and shows the wall continuing northwards from it.
2.4m of walling was revealed but it had been badly damaged by later activity in this area (mostly deep cellaring) and most of its inner face had been cut away. It did however survive to a width of 1m and traces of chalk rubble foundations were recorded to a depth of 0.4m. (1)
