Full Description
(summarised from publication)
During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. Excavations in an area which was originally occupied by the Cause Is Altered Public House near Princes Street (Cause Is Altered Site) in 1971, revealed the remains of a large chalk block drain, which was traced for a distance of 9.5m running north-south across the site.
The walls, base and cap were all of chalk blocks, laid flat on the bottom and top and on edge for the sides, giving a width of 40cm and internal height of 25cm. A branch drain was located, approximately half way along the uncovered section of the north-south drain, this was also constructed of chalk blocks but ran east, possibly towards the harbour. (1)
