Full Description
(Summarised from publication)
During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. Excavations in an area which was originally occupied by the Cause Is Altered Public House near Princes Street (Cause Is Altered Site) in 1971, revealed the remains of a large chalk block drain, 4.75m of which was traced running east-west, parallel to the structure B20.
The base slabs were are large chalk blocks while the sides were slightly smaller, and gave an internal width of 40-44cm and depth of at least 80cm. It probably superseded drain B56. (1)
