Full Description
(Summarised from publication)
During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, a latrine block was discovered between 2.7m and 3.5m from the inside face of the south wall of the Classis Britannica Fort, in 1971 at the Battle of Britain Homes site. 7.2m of the latrine's chalk block walling set in an orange clay was traced in the south west corner of the site.
At a point 5.5m from the east end of the wall, a cross wall was observed, thus creating an east compartment measuring 5.5m by 3.7m. No associated eastern wall was located and it is possible that this was left open of closed by a wooden wall or door. The walls survived to a maximum height of three courses. Within the structure there were slight traces of three rammed chalk floors interleaved with thin occupation layers, this suggests a long period of use of this latrine. Its interpretation as a latrine block rests on its association with a substantial stone lined sewer (B89), which was partly flushed by a drain (B83) entering by the internal wall. (1)
