Full Description
(Summarised from publication)
During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit a large sewer was located in the south east corner of the CLBR fort at the Battle of Britain Homes Site in 1971. Its east and west arms followed the line of the fort walls and were al total of 10.5m in length. The western arm originated in the nearby latrine block (B33). The sewer fed into the central culvert which led through the fort wall in the centre of its south-eastern corner.
It was constructed of chalk and tufa blocks on the bottom and sides, with large greensand blocks packed with pebbles for the base. The walls of the sewer survived to a maximum height of 71cm (four courses). The central channel was 40cm wide and contained a fil of domestic rubbish dating to the second and early third centuries.
