Monument record TR 34 SW 1663 - Road between barracks (B38) of the CLBR fort II, located at the Car Park Site, Dover

Summary

During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. Excavations in 1970 in an area which was originally occupied by a small car park on the north side of Queens Street revealed that the area between two barrack blocks (B20 and B21), totalling a distance of about 7m, was occupied by a metalled road. This had been heavily truncated by later activity at the site but enough remained to ascertain that there had been at least five layers of re metalling, giving a total depth of 1.4m and suggesting long and frequent use of this road. (location accurate to the nearest 2m based on available information).
