During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. Excavations in 1970 in an area which was originally occupied by a small car park on the north side of Queens Street a large chalk block drain was uncovered and traced for a distance of 22m, north-south along the line of the road between barrack B21 and B22.
All four sides were of chalk blocks and it measured 20cm by 14cm internally. It was associated with the second road on this site and so related to the period two rebuild of the adjacent barrack blocks. (1)
