Full Description
(Summarised from publication)
During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. Excavations in 1970 in an area which was originally occupied by a small car park on the north side of Queens Street revealed two gutter like drain outlets feeding into a small rectangular sump. Traces of the chalk block lining were still in situ within the sump on the north, south and west sides.
The two gutter like drains fed directly into the top of the sump, one coming from the north west and the other from the south, the southern drain had been badly damaged by later features. (1)
