Monument record TQ 97 SW 149 - Sheerness Old Jews Burial Ground

Summary

A small Jewish burial ground is situated on the southern side of Hope Street. It was opened in 1804 and used until about 1887 when the Jewish population had declined. It is rectangular in plan, approximately 20m long and 10m wide with a high brick wall surrounding the site. A few Matzevah monuments remain although the site is overgrown and in a very poor condition.

Full Description

19th century Jewish burial ground.

"In the 19th century, the town also had the kind of facilities and institutions that would be expected of a settlement of this size and type. These included a windmill, pumping station and religious institutions. These latter included non-conformist chapels and a Jewish burial ground."

"The Jewish burial ground lies on Hope Street and appears to have many memorial stones and burial markers surviving above-ground. It is undesignated…" (1)
