Monument record TR 34 SW 1746 - Two Roman chalk block bases, Cowgate Hill, Dover - possible part of an interior structure of the Roman fort of the Classis Britannica.
Summary
Two Roman chalk block bases were found during an archaeological evaluation carried out by Canterbury Archeological Trust in 2009 at the site of 1-7 Cowgate Hill, Dover. Both were constructed of large squared chalk blocks set in a cream silty clay. It was unclear whether these ‘bases’ represented a broad wall or some other structural feature. They were possibly part of a Roman structure situated within the interior of the Roman fort of the Classis Brittanica, but the limited scope of the excavation means that this remains uncertain.
