Monument record TR 34 SW 1747 - Two Roman floor surfaces, Cowgate Hill, Dover

Summary

Two Roman floor surfaces were identified during an archaeological evaluation carried out by Canterbury Archeological Trust in 2009 at the site of 1-7 Cowgate Hill, Dover. The earlier of the two was situated upon a levelling layer of brown clay and was composed of characteristic Roman opus signinum (pink concrete). This was later replaced by a rammed chalk floor. It is possible that both of these floors are associated with a Roman structure situated within the interior of the Roman fort of the Classis Brittanica, but the limited scope of the investigation means that this was not confirmed.
