Full Description

This site is marked as a Field Gun Battery on 1919 Chatham Land Front Map and was in Cookham Wood, now cleared (2). A document in the National Archive states that the ammunition allocation for Home Defence Naval 12 pr guns was 500 rounds of which 50 were Shrapnel Shells per gun.

This site is very close to the M2 coast bound link road and any trace may have been destroyed in its construction. There may though be some archaeological remains, although nothing has been seen on satellite images.

Because of the work carried out in this area it is even more difficult than usual to plot the exact location of the battery, so the grid reference may be wrong.

A battery location, probably with 4 gun pits, 2 shelters, a road, tunnel and fire trenches.

Current condition. Unknown probably destroyed. 28-02-2013 updated 05-04-2013 (1)
