Monument record TQ 86 SE 312 - First World War Pillbox, Keycol Hill, opposite Rook Lane, Newington.

Summary

The 1919 Chatham Land Front Map shows a square pillbox in this position, alongside the A2 almost opposite Rook Lane. It is a standard First World War square pillbox of the same pattern as the other 5 in the area and is located in scrub woodland, alongside the A2 road, Keycol Hill. Trees are growing very close to the site, in places seeming to grow from under its base. It has one embrasure c. 1.3m long, facing south-east. To its rear (north-west), there is what seems to be a small trench, estimated to be about 1.5 meters long by 0.75 meters wide. This may be what is left of the machine gun emplacement shown on a map from National Archives or possibly a Second World War slit trench on the same spot.
