Full Description
A number of post medieval features were located at the former site of the Post Office on Biggin Street, Dover, during an archaeological evaluation which was undertaken there ahead of the development of the site.
In trench 1, overlying a series of soil representing the Medieval cultivation of the site, a dump deposit relating to a 19th century cobbled surface was located. In trench 2 an east-west brick wall was located cutting the underlying Medieval deposits. This wall consisted of an offset concrete foundation and a partially demolished upper build of brick approximately 1m in depth. The wall extended along the entire north-west facing section of the trench an abutted the face of an earlier flint wall. It is likely that this wall was associated with a 19th century cellar at the site. In trench 3, again cutting the underlying Medieval deposits, was a was a construction trench containing the remains of an east-west post medieval cellar wall, a makeup layer and a NW-SE overlying wall were also seen and overlain by a further foundation and wall acting as a NW-SE return to a NE-SW cellar wall. The cellar floor was located and was overlain by 1.7m of rubble backfill and make up for the Post Office floor. A post medieval cellar wall was also located in trench 4. This was only seen in the north-west facing section. Two further walls, also of a likely post medieval date were uncovered within this trench, the first consisted only of chalk block foundations aligned NW-SE. The second represents a return of this first wall, it was aligned NE-SW and was constructed of roughly hewn Kentish ragstone blocks approximately 0.24m by 0.12m by 0.12m and un-knapped flint and wall was bonded with a white lime mortar. Two later additions were noted in the upper wall. The final post medieval feature to be uncovered was a well which was located in trench 5. This well was located immediately to the south of and cut an earlier well of Medieval date. It was slightly larger than the earlier example and was constructed of roughly hewn Kentish rag-stone approximately 0.22m by 0.16m together with chalk blocks and a possible Roman brick. The bond was a dark grey-blue mortar with charcoal. The outer diameter of this well was 1.4m and the inner 1.08m, it was backfilled with a silty clay containing chalk blocks and flint pieces. A singles shed of 15th century potter was located within this fill, this was almost certainly residual in what was a post medieval fill. (1)
