Full Description
(summarised from source) A chalk lined well of a possible later Medieval date was uncovered during an excavation at the former site of the Post Office at Biggin Street, Dover. The well cut the natural at 5.24m OD in the north east corner of trench 1. Only a quarter of the structure was visible and it was clear that it had been severely robbed. The well had an approximate radius of 2m and it was excavated to a similar depth revealing two fills, the lower of which was composed of sand and clay and included sherds of 13th century pottery, while the upper fill was essentially rubble and devoid of finds. The chalk blocks were bonded with a white shell flecked mortar. (1)
