The foundations of two late 18th to early 19th century terraced houses were recorded during an archaeological excavation undertaken off Bridge Street, Dover. Both buildings are orientated north-east to south-west and the foundation walls were constructed of flint with occasional brick fragments and cement, large chalk blocks were also used in places. The northern most of these two buildings (building 1) measured c. 7.2m by 3.3m, the floors were made up of backfilled deposits consisting of crushed mortar material and were lower than the level of the natural alluvium suggested that they represented a cellar floor below the contemporary street level. The southern building (building 2) measured c. 6.9m by 3.6m, it overlay a series on un-truncated colluvial deposits suggesting that unlike building one, building 2 was un-cellared. These buildings represent the remnants of small tenement houses that align with Branch Street to the south-west. The buildings either fronted onto a small lane to the rear of the properties fronting onto Branch Street or a small lane perpendicular to Branch Street and heading in a north-east to south west direction.
