Full Description

A number of features, including, walls, cess/coal dust pits, fireplaces and floors all dating to between the mid-19th and early 20th century, were located during an archaeological excavation undertaken off Bridge Street, Dover. These features all appear to be additions or improvements to two earlier buildings which date to the mid-18th century.

In detail: the two new fireplaces were inserted into the northern most of the two buildings (building 1) one was in the pre-existing north-western wall of the building and the other was on a new internal wall which separated the northeast and southwest halves of the building. Another new partition wall was also located in building 2, located at the south western end of the building. Alongside these partition walls, two rectangular structures were added, one was against the pre-existing north-western wall of building 2 and the other was in the north east corner of building 1, the purpose of these rectangular structures is unclear. Two chalk block walls were constructed to the south east of building 2, these are possibly external, two cess/coal dust pits constructed of flint blocks and cement were located abutting these new external walls. All of these features have a likely date of the mid 19th century. The later 19th century to early 20th century features include a new brick floor which was inserted into the southern room of building 1 and a possible new building located to the north east of building 2.
