Full Description
One (large and very fine) Pal handaxe from Ebbsfleet, Station Quarter South, TP 25, found during evaluation work in 2006 (1). The handaxe is in mint condition, and has a sharp slightly curved point and a thicker butt. It was found lying flat in the upper part of the thick brickearth deposit that is the top Pleistocene bed in this area, at c. 29m OD, 2m below the groundsurface which was at c. 31m OD at the time of fieldwork. Its fresh condition, and the proximity of other finds of a fresh condition handaxe and debitage from the same general area made during the HS1 elephant excavation in 2004 (2), suggest there may a buried palaeo-landsurface in the area.
