Full Description
The ceramic mural attached to the north wall of Cygnet House was commissioned to decorate the council offices with responsibility for the registration of births, deaths, and marriages, in 1962. The artist was Alan Boyson who trained at the Manchester Regional School of Art, and the Royal College of Art during the 1950s. In 2017 it was considered for Listed Building status but not deemed suitable. The report said "The mural at Cygnet House, Gravesend, c1962 by Alan Boyson has some artistic interest, and is an example of the post-Festival boom in murals, however its small-scale, ordinary materials and recessive location mean that it is not of sufficient historic or artistic interest to warrant designation at a national level. It may however, be considered to have local interest as an artwork by an important post-war artist." (1)
