Summary

Ashford general hospital was built in 1926-8 and designed by local architect Edward A. Jackson. Wartime additions included a shelter and a gas decontamination plant.

Full Description

General hospital with 90 beds built 1926-28 to a Neo-Georgian design by Edward A. Jackson. Two storey brick admin block, connected by a long central corridor to similar ward blocks behind. There is also a nurse's home, boiler house, and a mortuary. During the last war a brick-built gas decontamination plant and an underground shelter were added.(1-2)

Most of the buildings on the site were demolished between 2009/10 and 2012.

In 2009 or 2010 Archaeological Services & Consultancy Limited carried out a building survey. The hospital was expanded in the 1950s and '60s and a second operating theatre was added in the 1970s. The hospital ceased to function as a general hospital in the late 1970s. Part of the site was used as a hospital for the elderly in the 1980s. The hospital closed in the late 1990s. (4)
