Monument record TQ 94 NW 43 - Romano-British trackway, east of Newlands

Summary

A possible Romano-British trackway, 4.85m wide and 0.88m deep was found during archaeological investigations in an area to the east of Newlands. This feature was aligned north west to south east, and two different fills were idnetified within it; only the upper fill produced dateable finds, 21 sherds of late Iron Age/early Romano-British pottery (c. 100BC - 200AD). It is thought that the artefactual and organic material recovered from the trackway may comprise residual material from a nearby settlement, rather than neccessarily reflecting the lifetime of the track: this evidence does however show that the track fell out of use some time after 200 AD.

Full Description

A possible Romano-British trackway, first identified by evaluation, was re-exposed and sectioned. Limited artefactual dating evidence was recovered, confirming the results of the evaluation. The track crossed the trench in a hollow way which was 4.85m wide and 0.88m deep and was aligned north-west to south-east. Of the two identified fills, only the upper one produced dateable finds, 21 sherds of late Iron Age/early Romano-British pottery (c. 100BC - 200AD). Since the hollow way is likely to have developed and then been filled over a long period of time, the artefactual and organic material recovered is likely to comprise residual materialfrom the nearestsettlement, rather than neccessarily reflecting the lifetime of the track. All that can be said for certain is that the track fell out of use some time after the period c. 100 BC - 200AD. (1-2)

(See TQ 94 NW 44)

Runs for at least 45m. Was possibly metalled in later phases, with evidence of cobbles and/or gravel. (3-4)
