Full Description
In June 2000 a survey of three air-raid shelters was carried out as representative of types built at Deal. They were commissioned at the beginning of the war and existing plans for the structures suggest that they were intended for use at Deal and at the Royal Naval Hospital in Chatham. They were found to be in varied condition - ranging from dry to wet and filled with debris. Although most of the shelters fell into disuse at the end of the war, a few seem to have been maintained for use as underground stores during the post-war period. (1)
