Full Description
In September 2001 three small trenches were dug on the the proposed site of a new music school. Found were the remains of the courtyard surfaces of the Archbishop's Palace which stood on tis site and a large quantity of medieval pottery the majority dating between the 13th and 14th century( c.1225/50 - 1275. This bulk of pottery was found in a pit covered by part of one of these courtyard surfaces. The pottery found is possibly breakagaes from the nearby Great Kitchen. Roman demolition debris was also found, used as bedding for a yard surface, suggests that at a lower level Anglo-Saxon and Roman archaeological sequences survive in good condition.(1)
