Full Description
An intertidal site tentatively identified as Late Neolithic was discovered on the Hoo Flats, River Medway in July 2004. The site lies on the junction of Tertiary (London) Clay and blue-grey alluvial deposits, while relict plastic (Lower) peat overlies the alluvium. Features associated with the site comprise the base of several pits(?) containing burnt flint cut into the London Clay, ditches, isolated lithics (including an axe thinning flake) and pottery fragments (including a flint-tempered plain bowl rim-sherd). These finds date the site to the Middle to Late Neolithic. A substantial number of roundwood timbers were noted as being set within the peat deposits, above the alluvium, in a rough alignment and are interpreted as being the remains of a possible trackway. The site has been highlighted as requiring further investigation particularly as it is subject to continued coastal erosion. However, the area is regularly monitored by the Upchurch Archaeological Research Group. No intrusive investigations were undertaken on the site. (1)
