Full Description
Possible location of earliest settlement at Milton, close to the now isolated church to the NE of the later medieval town. Milton was an ancient royal demesne, certainly a villa regis whose origins can be taken back to the 6th century. Five or more distinct AS cemeteries have produced some fine jewellery. Attacked by the Danes in 893 showing it was an important royal settlement at that time. Not quite a town at the Norman Conquest, but on the verge of urban status; had been attacked and burned around 1052 by Earl Godwin. (1).
