Full Description
Wreck discovered and reported by Finch is either the Matthias or the Charles V, both originally captured from the Dutch and acting as guardships at Chatham when they became victims of the Dutch invasion 1666-7. Documentary reports point to the remains being those of the Charles V, which is reported to have exploded. The ship, burnt at her moorings, drifted up with the tide to the entrance of St Mary's Creek (1) (now the basins separating St Mary's Island from Chatham.)
