"...I noticed many fragments of Roman tiles lying scattered around, and the ground appeadrd discoloured by fire, as if a Roman building had been burned down at that spot." Words attributed to Payne and indexed by the Sittingbourne and Swale Archaeological Group - no other information supplied (1).
