Summary

Possible remains of base of jetty by Cliffe Fort. Comprises an iron superstructure and wood piles set in the concrete seawall. A jetty is also marked at this location on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map (c.1858-1873) and in a number of aerial photographs. Site visited during a 2005 coastal survey.

Full Description

Jetty shown on 1st ed OS 6 inch (1), Seen as an abandoned base in 1950's AP (2-7). The base of the jetty is comprised of an iron beam superstructure on wooden piles set in the concrete seawall. It has iron fittings. Other wooden piles along the line of the wall running north-south over 90m-100m suggest the jetty was a substantial structure. Metal posts by jetty are evidence of an attempt to stop rubble sliding down sea wall (8)
