Summary

Castellated Second World War trench system with dugouts was formerly located near Birchington. Cropmarks identified from aerial photographs. Recorded during an assessment of the north Kent coast by Wessex Archaeology and mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project.

Full Description

Castellated Trench system with dugouts. Photographs (1,2).

Cropmark traces of crenelated Second World War trench system with dugouts was formerly located near Birchington visible on aerial photographs. Much of the trench system was visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1941RAF/26J/BR194 VC 36 10-JAN-1941, but fell out of use in the second half of the war and were infilled. The ditch system can still be seen as cropmarks amongst the remains of prehistoric settlement and barrow sites on Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 14-APR-2015, EARTH.GOOGLE.COM JUL-2013. ACCESSED 17-APR-2024. These were mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project (3-5).
