Summary

The remains of embankments are recorded on the Ordnance Survey 2nd - 4th edition historic maps (c.1896-1940). Site identified during an assessment of the north Kent coast by Wessex Archaeology and subsequently by Historic England, visible as earthworks on LIDAR Environment Agency DTM 02-DEC-2019.

Full Description

Shown on all OS mapping editions (1,2,3). Photographs (4).

The fragmented remains of a former embankment extending over 800m NNW-SSE immediately to the west of the Wantsum River seen on lidar images and mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. The southern section is partially mapped on early OS maps, but the bank continues northwards beyond the mapped extent in the direction of the current A299. (5)
