Monument record TQ 77 NE 1030 - Medieval/post-medieval sea wall, Halstow Marshes

Summary

The remains of an old sea wall on Halstow Marshes. Identified from aerial photographs. Also Marked on the 2nd to 4th edition Ordnance Survey maps (c.1891-1940). The earthworks of medieval or post medieval sea defences in the parish of High Halstow can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947. This sea wall runs from Egypt Bay in the north to the southern edge of Buckland Marshes in the south. The bank is positioned to the west of Decoy Fleet and Buckland Fleet with which it connects. The southern end of the sea wall once lined-up with the defences that run along the southern end of Buckland Marshes (see NMR 1535246). The southern 400m of the earthwork has since been levelled. It was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.

Full Description

Old sea wall. Photographs (1-9). Aslo marked on 2-4th edition OS maps (10).

The earthworks of medieval or post medieval sea defences in the parish of High Halstow can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947. This sea wall runs from Egypt Bay in the north (TQ 7803 7861) to the southern edge of Buckland Marshes in the south (TQ 7775 7708). The bank is positioned to the west of Decoy Fleet and Buckland Fleet with which it connects. The southern end of the sea wall once lined-up with the defences that run along the southern end of Buckland Marshes (see NMR 1535246) at TQ 7775 7708. This part of the earthwork has since been levelled and the most southerly surviving part is at TQ7747 7742. It was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(11-14)
