The earthwork remains of a possible post medieval livestock enclosure on Stoke Saltings can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2007. This curvilinear enclosure is defined by an earthwork bank which could have functioned as a sea wall during higher tides and provided a dry area for livestock that were grazing the saltings. The enclosure, depicted on an 1870 Ordnance Survey map, measures up to 37m by 24m and could be accessed via a causeway that led across the saltings. Grazing on the saltings must have largely been abandoned by 1896 by which time a considerable area of saltings had been removed (the mud was used in the manufacture of Portland cement).This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
