Summary

The remains of a hard can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2007. This hard crosses Slede Creek, which separates Oakham Marsh from the mainland. This curving feature is approximately 40m long. The 1870 Ordnance Survey map shows that it formed part of a path across saltings that connected Hoo Marshes, east of Damhead Creek to Oakham Marsh. These saltings have since been eroded and the hard is now isolated on the mud of Slede Ooze. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.

Full Description

The remains of a hard can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2007. This hard, centred on TQ 8269 7243, crosses Slede Creek, which separates Oakham Marsh from the mainland. This curving path runs between TQ 8273 7256 and TQ 8283 7235 and is approximately 40m long. The 1870 Ordnance Survey map shows that the hard formed part of a path across saltings that connected Hoo Marshes, east of Damhead Creek to Oakham Marsh. These saltings have since been eroded and the hard is now isolated on the mud of Slede Ooze. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1-2)
